German Grade Scale & Bavarian Formula Guide

The definitive international credential translation manual. Understand how German universities, Uni-Assist, and the Bavarian Formula evaluate foreign academic transcripts.

Official Benchmark

The German Academic Grading Scale (1.0 to 5.0)

Unlike Anglo-American or Asian systems where higher numerical scores (like 4.0 GPA or 100%) represent top performance, the German academic system is inverted: 1.0 is the highest possible grade, and 4.0 is the minimum passing grade.

1.0 – 1.5
Sehr Gut
Very Good / Excellent

Outstanding academic performance, well above average requirements. Guarantees top percentile standing for TU9 universities.

1.6 – 2.5
Gut
Good

Performance significantly exceeding average standards. Highly competitive for German restricted admission (NC) Master programs.

2.6 – 3.5
Befriedigend
Satisfactory

Performance meeting standard academic requirements on average. Eligible for non-restricted (zulassungsfreie) degree courses.

3.6 – 4.0
Ausreichend
Sufficient / Pass

Minimum passing standard despite evident flaws. Barely satisfies general academic qualification for university entry.

4.1 – 5.0
Nicht Bestanden
Fail / Inadequate

Performance does not meet basic standards. Deficient knowledge; course or degree not recognized for university entry.

KMK Resolution 15.03.1991 / 18.11.2004

The Modified Bavarian Formula (Modifizierte bayerische Formel)

The Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs of the Länder in the Federal Republic of Germany (KMK) established this linear interpolation formula to uniformly normalize diverse international grading systems.

German Grade (N) = 1 + 3 × [ (Nmax − Nd) ÷ (Nmax − Nmin) ]
N
The resulting converted German grade. (Rounded to 1 decimal place).
Nmax
Maximum possible score in your university grading system (e.g. 10.0, 4.0, or 100%).
Nmin
Minimum passing grade required to obtain credit in your home system (e.g. 4.0, 2.0, or 40%).
Nd
Your actual achieved grade (CGPA / Average / Percentage) on your transcript.

Mandatory Consular Verification

APS Certificate (Akademische Prüfstelle) Requirements

Applicants with academic qualifications from India, China, and Vietnam MUST obtain an official APS Certificate before applying for a German student visa and before Uni-Assist will process their application.

Authenticity Check
The German Embassy directly verifies marksheets and university accreditation with your registrar.
Processing Time
Typically 3 to 6 weeks. Students must apply for APS early before semester deadlines.
Digital Certificate
Digital verification code is issued and uploaded directly to Uni-Assist and German visa portals.
