Why We Started GPAtoECTS.com

Germany is home to some of the world’s most renowned tuition-free public universities, including the Technical University of Munich (TUM), RWTH Aachen, and LMU Munich. Every year, hundreds of thousands of international students from India, the United States, Nigeria, Pakistan, China, the UK, and across Latin America apply for Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programs.

However, the German admissions system relies on an inverted scale: 1.0 is the best possible grade (Sehr Gut), while 4.0 is the minimum passing score (Ausreichend). This inversion causes massive confusion among applicants accustomed to 4.0 GPA, 10.0 CGPA, letter grades (A–F), or percentage scales.

Many applicants pay expensive consultants or use unreliable online calculators that apply arbitrary linear scaling rather than the legally standardized Bavarian formula. GPAtoECTS.com was created to eliminate this opacity by providing an authoritative, open-access converter with clear step-by-step mathematical proofs.

How We Prioritize Mathematical Accuracy

Unlike generic grading tools, our algorithms account for country-specific minimum passing marks (N_min) and maximum grading marks (N_max). For instance:

  • In the Indian collegiate system, a passing threshold can vary between 40%, 45%, or 50% depending on whether the university operates on CBCS, Mumbai University, or VTU standards.
  • In the United States, a 2.0 (C) is standard for undergraduate passing, while graduate programs frequently enforce a 3.0 (B) minimum cutoff.
  • In European higher education, 1 ECTS represents 25 to 30 hours of academic workload (totalling 60 ECTS per academic year).

Our calculators allow applicants to customize both the minimum passing grade and maximum possible score, ensuring that the resulting German grade reflects their university’s specific grading regulations.

Editorial Standards & Financial Transparency

Our guides, articles, and visa comparisons are thoroughly researched by higher education researchers and alumni of German public universities. We cross-verify regulations directly with official sources, including the German Federal Foreign Office (Auswärtiges Amt), the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service), Anabin (KMK), and Uni-Assist e.V.

To maintain our platform without charging students, we may earn modest referral commissions when users open student blocked accounts or register for mandatory statutory health insurance through verified partners (Expatrio, Coracle, or Fintiba). This does not influence our mathematical formulas or editorial evaluations. For full details, see our Affiliate Disclosure.
